Aino Väänänen is a Finnish documentary photographer, her stories focus on various aspects of human life ranging from political movements to underprivileged minorities.
Aino has lived in various countries, now she resides in London. Because of her travel experience, the topic of “Untrue Finns” became very personal to Aino and helped her discover her own past.
The exhibition shows portraits of people from various immigrant backgrounds, who live in Finland. The portraits are paired with a landscape that somehow describes the person’s relation to Finland. The exhibition is also about criticising the stereotypical image of a Finnish identity. It portrays the diversity and complexity of a personal identity also taking into consideration the fact that there seem to be instances who feel self-righteously in the position of defining who is a Finn and who is not.
